Volunteering
Volunteering at Gathering Ground means being part of something from the very beginning. We’re building a community-led space within the restored Old Basin House, turning a historic canal-side building into a welcoming haven for connection, creativity and food growing in the city.
It’s a fun and supportive environment where diverse skills and interests are valued. Whether that’s growing, cooking, community-building or creative projects. Whatever you bring, there’s space for you.
Volunteering Looks Like…
Garden & Food Growing
Get involved in our community garden along the canal — planning, planting, tending and harvesting in an urban environment while learning about sustainable growing practices.
Cooking
Supper Clubs, Community Meals & cultural food events. Food brings people together and is something we can all resonate with. Our kitchen is a place for joy, stories and conversations over food.
Events & Community
Help bring our programme of workshops and gatherings to life by assisting with curation, set-up, hosting, welcoming guests and supporting facilitators.
Growing Together
Volunteering at Gathering Ground is about more than helping out — it’s about becoming part of a shared space and purpose.
You’ll build genuine connections with others, learn new skills through hands-on experience, and contribute to something meaningful within the local community. We offer informal training and support along the way and have regular socials to engage.
Observing
With lots of plans and plenty of energy, it’s easy to focus only on the doing. We try to be intentional about creating space to slow down.
Once a month, we set aside a volunteering session for mindful observation of the space — noticing seasonal changes, growth, atmosphere and the small shifts that shape the whole. Volunteers are invited to respond through writing, drawing or other creative ways of capturing what they see.
Observation helps us stay connected to the place we’re building and to one another, ensuring we grow with care and intention.
Interested in Volunteering?
We host volunteer sessions twice a week from March to December:
Wednesdays: 3:30pm–6:30pm
One Weekend Day: 10am–1pm
Each month, we send out a volunteer newsletter with upcoming session dates and any key updates.
We also host a monthly volunteer social — a chance to down tools, connect and enjoy something fun together — as well as a monthly induction session for new volunteers to learn more about the space, what’s coming up and how to get involved.
Snacks and drinks are provided during sessions, and we often share lunch together after our weekend gathering.
